World Mile Challenge

One can see the effort and determination to achieve the goal when the athletes perform. Though the aim is to perform to be at the top, the preparation for participation matters. The “World Athletics Day” observation honours the dedication and commitment to excel in athletics. The first World Athletics Day was celebrated on May 15, 1996. Subsequently, it was changed to May 7 to align with the date of the foundation of the IAAF. Sports has the uniqueness of being inclusive, and diversity is seen. Sports, particularly athletics, enhance the ability to work as a team. The spirit of togetherness is reflected. Going that extra mile is essential in realising the goals. This year’s “World Athletics Day” theme is ‘World Mile Challenge’. Aim to go beyond one’s abilities, which will result in success. Let us celebrate the athletes’ determination to achieve their goals, made possible by going beyond one’s abilities.

One can see the effort and determination to achieve the goal when the athletes perform. Though the aim is to perform to be at the top, the preparation for participation matters. The determination of athletics not to give up in the face of adversity is to be celebrated. The love for the sport motivates the athletes to be in the race. The “World Athletics Day” observation honours the dedication and commitment to excel in athletics. The first World Athletics Day was celebrated on May 15, 1996. The initiative of Late Primo Nebiolo, the then-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), led to the observation of the special day. Subsequently, World Athletics Day was changed to May 7 to align with the date of the foundation of the IAAF. IAAF is now known as World Athletics. In India, the Athletics Federation of India (founded in 1946) is the apex body responsible for managing athletics and is affiliated with the IAAF and the Indian Olympic Association.  

Sports are unique in that they are inclusive, and diversity is seen. Sports, particularly athletics, enhance the ability to work as a team. The spirit of togetherness is reflected. Observations like these aim to establish the link between youth and sport. Being an athlete helps to be strong and healthy. Age is not a limit. Everyone can participate. Regular walking, running, and other activities lead to maintaining good health.  

Going that extra mile is essential in realising the goals. This year’s “World Athletics Day” theme is ‘World Mile Challenge’. The focus is on running, jogging, or walking a mile to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Roger Bannister (the first man to run a sub-four-minute mile) in 1954. We always say to travel that extra mile and be responsive to other’s needs. Being athletic is one way of doing so. As someone said, Athletics is for a better world. Practising athletes teach one to aim above one’s current abilities. It is very apt for everyone. Aim to go beyond one’s abilities, which will result in success. Let us celebrate the athletes’ determination to achieve their goals, made possible by going beyond one’s abilities.
