World Earth Day

Restore Our Earth

Humanity found ways of creating newer problems for themselves while finding solutions to the problems they are facing. Be it movements like “end plastic pollution” or special efforts are needed to protect endangered species from extinction. But the question is protecting from whom? Mother earth is suffering and urging a call for action, and is int it is the time for each of us to do our bit in order to restore the planet and focus on rebuilding the world’s ecosystems?  Environmental challenges of larger dimensions continue to haunt the world. Making things worse, governments are going back on promises made, leaving the Paris accord in peril. The history of celebrating world earth day dates back to 1970 when a large number of Americans gathered, and the seeds were sown for raising awareness of the responsibility of humans to protect mother earth. We need to help it to continue to protect us. Humans’ intelligence is reflected in the ability to commission space odysseys, travel to far off planets, flying a helicopter on Mars or whatnot? In a hurry to conquer things, moved away from realising what is required, that is, keeping balance and equilibrium. Humanity found wanting in taking steps to protect mother earth. Restore Our Earth, it is ours, and we have the responsibility. Only when we survive, our responsibility to the families and communities we live in can be fulfilled. Let us promote harmony with nature and the Earth.
Can we hope that the world would learn to live within its limits?

Humanity found ways of creating newer problems for themselves while finding solutions to the problems they are facing. One of the materials, which is damaging the mother earth is plastic. Recall it being used so generously across the world before realisation daunted and societies started taking steps to reduce its impact. Movements like “end plastic pollution” is trying to lead the way. Special efforts are needed to protect endangered species from extinction. But the question is protecting from whom? Mother earth is suffering, and it is the time when each out us to do our bit to restore the planet and focus on rebuilding the world’s ecosystems. Mother Earth is urging a call for action.

It is ironic that a movement like this was necessary for environmental legislation to be passed by governments across the world. Earth Day is a name used for two similar global observances. While some people celebrate Earth Day around the time of the March Equinox, others observe the occasion on April 22 each year.

The crisis mother earth is facing is reflected in many ways. Have you heard about a new river being formed? Perennial rivers are getting dried up.  Excess use of fertilisers are pushing the lands to become desert, groundwater becomes depleted, rains becoming either scarce or too much, raising sea level. All are there for us to see.  It is our inability to balance the requirement and renewable equilibrium limits of mother earth.

The way the COVID pandemic has brought the world to kneel down and threaten humanity’s very survival, communities struggling to cope up, governments found wanting in taking protective measures, is a warning bell to humankind from nature. If one traceback the origin of this pandemic, one realises it is the indiscrete use of species for consumption and food habits. Maintaining diversity in nature and sustaining is the key to ensure equilibrium. Celebrations and occasions like these bring people worldwide together to celebrate, contemplate and resolve to take steps to minimise the damage.

The wonders that happened during three weeks of lockdown, be it the peacock dancing in the streets of the city or the animals and birds coming out and rediscovering themselves, gives hope and shows us the path humans need to take to travel.  We need to contemplate that to save the mother earth, a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet is the need of the times.

Restore Our Earth, it is ours, and we have the responsibility. Only when we survive, our responsibility to the families and communities we live in can be fulfilled. Let us promote harmony with nature and the Earth.

Can we hope that the world would learn to live within its limits?
