Every year, India celebrates Air Force Day on October 8. It is a celebration of one of the vital armed forces in the country. The IAF (Bharatiya Vayu Sena) was founded in the year 1932. It is the 90th year of the celebration this year. An occasion to pay tribute to the personnel for their contributions and the excellence the air force demonstrated. It is acknowledging the efforts and sacrifices the defence force personnel make. With more than 140,000 active personnel and 1400 aircrafts, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is the fourth largest air force in the world, with the US, China, and Russia are leading the race. Another distinction of the IAF is the considerable number of women on its rolls. The latest entrant to the fleet, Rafale, has a women fighter pilot. In addition to military operations, IAF plays a role in times of natural disasters, like cyclones and Tsunami. The IAF has also taken part in UN peacekeeping missions. We are proud of our defence personnel who put their self-interest and families behind them and give their best to protect us. Philosophically, one cannot help pondering why humanity cannot come together to provide prosperity to all. It uses its ability and intelligence to eradicate poverty and solve many diseases that take away many lives.

Celebrating their contributions is an occasion to enthuse the younger generation to pursue their career with the air force. The Air Force Day parade is held outside Delhi and in Chandigarh for the first time. The parade is a spectacle with around eighty aircrafts participating in the fly-past. People gather to relish these demonstrations. This year’s parade has its speciality, the indigenously built Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), ‘Prachand’, is set to highlight its aerial prowess during the Air Force Day fly-past. A new pattern of combat uniform for Indian Air Force personnel is also being released.

Establishing the Air force dates back to 1932, and at that time, it was an auxiliary air force of the British Empire. Its contributions led to the prefixing of Royal to the Indian Air Force and continued up to 1950 when India became a republic. With more than 140,000 active personnel and 1400 aircrafts, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is the fourth largest air force in the world. The US, China, and Russia are leading the race. Another distinction of the IAF is the considerable number of women on its rolls. Be it the fighter pilots, women officers, and navigators. The latest entrant to the fleet, Rafale, has a women fighter pilot. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the IAF.

IAF has played a significant role in all the wars India has fought since independence. During World War II, the IAF played an instrumental role in halting the advance of the Japanese army in Burma. Played an exemplary role in responding to the Pulwama attack in 2019. Different countries observe air force day on other days. USSR on August 12, Ukraine on August 6 and Germany on January 9.

IAF extends great support during natural calamities in the country. In addition to military operations, IAF plays a role in times of natural disasters, like cyclones and Tsunami. The IAF has also taken part in UN peacekeeping missions. Its role in rescuing an enormous number of civilians during the floods in Uttarakhand has won accolades from many.

We are proud of our defence personnel who put their self-interest and families behind them and give their best to protect us. Philosophically, one cannot help pondering why humanity cannot come together to provide prosperity to all. It uses its ability and intelligence to eradicate poverty and solve many diseases that take away many lives.
