Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances

As globalisation grows, so does the realisation of interdependence. The recent ongoing wars are reminders of how interdependent the world has become. Globalisation and interdependence are opening new opportunities. Technological advances and capital investments are necessary for the growth of the world economy, paving the way for improving living standards around the world. The “World Day of Social Justice” is commemorated on February 20 every year. It aims to encourage and reflect on the importance of building fairer and more equitable societies. The harsh realities of disparity, inequality and job insecurity haunt the world. An integrated approach and alliances at the global level are required to overcome these challenges. Change in approach is the need of the times for societies struggling to bring people out of poverty by creating employment opportunities. Minimising the period for skilling and reskilling is a challenge to handle. It is the duty of all of us to contribute to creating frameworks to achieve a “society for all”.As Martin Luther King Jr said, injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere. Humans must contemplate why we are pushing the world to where it is today, becoming increasingly unjust. Let us work together to create a more just and inclusive world.
Social justice is based on fairness, equality, respect for diversity, access to social protection, and the application of human rights in all spheres of life, including in the workplace. As we face the consequences of the global financial and economic crisis, which has led to significant increases in unemployment and poverty and is straining social integration, these principles are more important than ever.

As globalisation grows, so does the realisation of interdependence. Globalisation and interdependence are opening new opportunities. Technological advances and capital investments are necessary for the growth of the world economy, paving the way for improving living standards around the world. The recent ongoing wars are reminders of how interdependent the world has become. There is a need to diversify the resources to ensure the supplies. “World Day of Social Justice” is commemorated every year on February 20. It aims to encourage and reflect on the importance of building fairer and more equitable societies. The UN observation started in 2009. ILO adopted a declaration in 2008 on social justice for fair globalisation. The Philadelphia Declaration (1944), the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action for Social Development (1995) and the Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (1998) formed the basis for the same. The impetus given by ILO led to the UN adopting the resolution to declare the observation of “World Day of Social Justice”. The ILO marks the day by organising a series of events worldwide. They focus on fostering collaborations, bridging gaps, and making this a just world.
The harsh realities of disparity, inequality and job insecurity haunt the world. Average annual employment growth has come down to ~0.1% from what used to be 0.9%. The number of jobs required to keep pace with the growing number of people eligible for employment is enormous. An integrated approach and alliances at the global level are required to overcome these challenges.
Development and social justice are indispensable. Ensuring peace and security within and among the nations is essential to achieve them. With digital technologies dominating the world in all spheres, ensuring equitable access to these technologies, promoting literacy, protecting privacy and ensuring ethical use of technology becomes essential. With the growth of automation and AI, addressing algorithmic bias leading to discrimination needs to be factored in. The problem of digital economies leading to job losses is a challenge societies and governments must address. One is the job losses, and the other is the challenge of acquiring newer skills, delineating a large population and creating an unjust environment. Society struggling to bring people out of poverty by creating employment opportunities must change their approaches. Minimising the period for skilling and reskilling is a challenge to handle. Infusing capital and bringing the necessary policy changes are to be given priority. It is the duty of all of us to contribute to creating frameworks to achieve a “society for all”.
