International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Reparations, Racial Justice and Equality
for People of African Descent

The UN General Assembly proclaimed March 21 to be observed as “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination” in 1966. It called for taking steps to eliminate racial discrimination. It is a work in progress for the UN and, for that matter, for the world. On this day, in South Africa, the indiscretion of those in power resorted to firing, leading to the loss of life of 69 people. Discrimination haunts humanity. Its manifestation differs, such as rich-poor, man-women, colour, religious beliefs, languages, and so on. When it comes to societies like India, discrimination based on caste is rampant. In many places, the discrimination is systemic and often subtle. If you are into imparting education, creating a genuinely inclusive learning environment is essential. Create an atmosphere of assurance where people come out to express if they feel they are being discriminated against. Governments must take appropriate steps to eradicate discrimination. If actions do not yield results for decades, it is time to think differently and take steps to make the world devoid of discrimination.

Racism continues to poison institutions, social structures, and everyday life in every society. It continues to be a driver of persistent inequality. No country is immune to intolerance nor free of hate. Let us unite around our common humanity and speak as one for equality, justice and dignity for all.

Amina J Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General, UN

March 21, 1960, was a day of indiscretion demonstration by those in power in South Africa. There was a police firing, killing 69 people who were protesting peacefully against the apartheid. The powers then to be, used force and resorted to firing where innocent people lost their lives. The UN General Assembly proclaimed that March 21 be observed as “International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination” in 1966. It called for taking steps to eliminate racial discrimination. It is a work in progress for the UN and, for that matter, for the world. It is essential to raise awareness and seek support for global action on racism, bigotry, xenophobia, and other intolerance.

Over the years, UNESCO has observed the International Day by organising events at the  Headquarters and its offices worldwide. UNESCO was founded to build peace and combat hatred. Ironically, even after 79 years of its founding, the situation has not changed, and divisions and rifts continue to plague humanity. UNICEF organises “Voices of Youth”, an online bulletin board for young people to express themselves.

Believe in the inherent dignity and equality of all human beings. Discrimination is a violation of fundamental human rights.

Mahatma Gandi

Discrimination haunts humanity. Its manifestation differs, such as rich-poor, man-women, colour, religious beliefs, languages, and so on. When it comes to societies like India, discrimination based on caste is rampant. In many places, the discrimination is systemic and often subtle. Discrimination manifests everywhere, including where one studies, works or seeks health care. The world has seen racial profiling and its consequences.

If you are into imparting education, creating a genuinely inclusive learning environment is essential. Create an atmosphere of assurance where people come out to express if they feel they are being discriminated against because of their race, religion, or colour. It is one’s ability that should matter, and those who have been discriminated against are encouraged to come out of the challenges faced for a long time. Governments must take appropriate steps to eradicate discrimination rather than adopting appeasing policies. If actions do not yield results for decades, it is time to think differently and take steps that make the world devoid of discrimination.

Realising the vision of a world
free of racism and racial discrimination
demands action every day, at every level,
in every society.
