Why is it Fools’ Day? Nobody Knows.

One possible reason is that France transitioned from the Julian to Gregorian calendar in the sixteenth century from April 1st to January 1st. Those who continued observing April 1st as the new year have become the subject of jokes and are called “April fools.” Newspapers and media houses have used this opportunity to carry stories creating elaborate April Fools’ Day hoaxes. Wikipedia lists the well-reported April fool pranks. The BBC’s Smell-O-Vision, Google Gulp and Swiss Spaghetti Harvest are some of them. When Google announced the launch of Gmail on April 1st, 2004, people thought it was another prank by Google. In the era of social media, fake news and unverified information are spread across social media platforms, making every day a fool’s day. On this Fools Day, we can resolve not to be fooled (sure, it must be the funniest prank one can play?).

April 1st takes individuals to their younger days when people tried to play pranks on friends, and many wanted to be careful and not be fooled. The question that comes to mind is why April 1st is called April Fools Day. A search on the net and some research indicate that the exact reason is unknown. 

One possible reason is that France transitioned from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in the sixteenth century. from April 1st to January 1st. In Julian’s calendar, the new year commences on April 1st, coinciding with the spring equinox. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted, January 1st became the new year’s dawn. It took some time for people to absorb it. Those who continued observing April 1st as the new year have become the subject of jokes and are called “April fools.” Placing a paper fish on their backs is the most used prank.  

Media houses have used this opportunity to carry stories creating elaborate April Fools Day hoaxes. Wikipedia lists the well-reported April fool pranks. The BBC’s Smell-O-Vision (1965), Google Gulp (2005) and Swiss Spaghetti Harvest (1957) are some of them.

It is reported that Google co-founders used to pull pranks, and they used to do it by rolling out outlandish ideas every April Fools Day. When Google announced the launch of Gmail on April 1st 2004, people thought it was another prank. It has been 20 years, and having a Gmail ID has become one of the credentials that has been taken for granted.

Luckily, the traditions of playing pranks have been harmless and allowed us to have fun with each other. It could be that you are the player or a victim. April Fools Day continues to be a mix of humour and mischief.

In the era of social media, fake news and unverified information are spread across social media platforms. In a way, that is throwing pranks at the susceptible ones and making every day a fool’s day. Maybe these people are not satisfied with having only one day in a year. The irony is that earlier, the traditions of playing pranks used to be harmless and were an opportunity to have fun. Some people decide to take on themselves to fool the world, and unfortunately, these pranks often damage society’s harmony.            

Philosophically speaking, one is susceptible to being fooled by expectations and misplaced beliefs. Introspection is the need of the hour. On this Fools’ Day, we can resolve not to be fooled (sure, it must be the funniest prank one can play?). Telling that they know why April 1st is celebrated as Fools Day can be referred to as an excellent prank to be played on the Fools Day.
