A day without laughter is a day wasted.

Laughter has no language and is a great way to bring everybody together without bias, saysDr Madan Kataria. Laughter is enjoyable and a simple tool humans can use to enhance well-being and satisfaction in life. Laughter may not heal or resolve everything, but it can help alleviate many concerns. World Laughter Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of May.
The origin of World Laughter Day dates back to 1998 when the first celebration happened in Mumbai, organised by Dr Madan Kataria, founder of the worldwide laughter yoga movement, with more than 12,000 people coming together. Dr Kataria told the BBC that the movement’s aim is “health, happiness and world peace through laughter”. Subsequently, it started happening around the world. “Happy-demic,” the first World Laughter Day observation outside India, was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on January 9, 2000. The observation found its place in “The Guinness Book of World Records.” The observation of World Laughter Day is generally an open-air event, and to facilitate the participation of people without being impacted by the cold, the observation moved to May and observed on the first Sunday of May worldwide. World Laughter Day celebration is by people taking a procession chanting “Ho Ho, Ha-Ha-Ha” and “very good, very good, yay!”.
The observation of World Laughter Day is to highlight the benefits of laughter. Acknowledge the contributions of thousands of Laughter Clubs worldwide in promoting wellness and overall well-being through laughter. The observation is in more than 115 countries through the Laughter Clubs.
Humans are known to laugh; perhaps it started millions of years ago. Sigmund Freud says laughter releases psychic energy. Scientists believe that humans laughed before they could speak. Some animals laugh, too.
The chemistry of laughter. Whenever one hears someone laughing, it triggers the premotor cortical region of the brain, activating laughter. It is a spontaneous action. Laughing results in a general sense of well-being. Endorphins (natural painkillers) are triggered to improve cardiac health, reduce stress hormone levels, and lower blood pressure. Researchers indicate that 10 to 15 minutes of laughter can burn up to 40 calories.
As Dr Madan Kataria says, your body does not know the difference between being happy or acting happy. People should “fake it until you make it”. Learn to laugh at yourself. Humans tend to take themselves too seriously. Learning to laugh at oneself is necessary, making it easier to handle situations.
While laughing is good, the visual media makes one laugh, depicting the physical and mental limitations of others. Be cautious not to get into the trap. It puts inclusivity at stake. People with such disabilities find it difficult to get included in the society.
In the race to achieve materialistic comforts, humans have forgotten the purpose of the same. Forgot to contemplate and introspect about whether the path taken is worth the troubles it brings. Especially on the health front and maintaining cordial relations with fellow human beings. There is an easy solution: laugh.
