Fostering Innovation Amid Global Challenges:
A Public Sector Perspective

Effective public administration is crucial for creating a better future for all. Governments struggle to function effectively without capable public administration, hindering sustainable development efforts. Recognising the importance of public service institutions, the UN passed a resolution in 2002 to observe 23 June as “The UN Public Service Day”. Though the public trust in governmental institutions is increasing, more needs to be done. Recognising the work of public servants makes young people ready to pursue their careers in the public sector. Efficient, Effective, inclusive and accountable institutions are necessary for realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16). Shaping institutional arrangements is essential for steering the implementation and realisation of SDGs and modernising public administration to meet today’s challenges.

From healthcare professionals and educators to civil servants, public servants work tirelessly to enhance the quality of life for all members of society. Governments struggle to function effectively without capable public administration, hindering sustainable development efforts. Recognising the importance of public service institutions, the UN passed a resolution in 2002 to observe 23 June as “The UN Public Service Day“. The observation focuses on celebrating public service contributions to the community and the development process. It aims to set the processes for recognising public servants for their work and to encourage young people to pursue careers in the public sector.
The UN Public Service Awards are given as part of the observation. These are considered one of the revered recognitions for excellence in public service. Member states organise special events highlighting the contribution of public service in the development process. Though the public trust in governmental institutions is increasing, a lot more can be done. Recognising the work of public servants makes young people ready to pursue their careers in the public sector.
There is a need to take capacity-building initiatives towards institution building, human resources development, strengthening financial management and harnessing the power of information and technology. Efficient, Effective, inclusive and accountable institutions are necessary for realising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 16). Shaping institutional arrangements is essential for steering the implementation and realisation of SDGs and modernising public administration to meet today’s challenges.
