International Civil Aviation Day

Safe Skies. Sustainable Future: Together

Civil Aviation is crucial in promoting economic development and interconnecting the world.   For 80 years, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has been working on ensuring global aviation is safe and secure. ICAO initiative and support from the government of Canada, the UN adopted a resolution to observe 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day and is a UN observation. At any given minute, ~8000 aeroplanes fly over the world’s skies, with ~100,000 flights taking off and landing daily. Globally, ~10 million passengers travel by air. It is a 2.7 trillion-dollar economy. The aviation industry is focussing on absorbing emerging and innovative technologies. The way forward will be uncrewed aircraft operations, developing alternative fuels, exploring electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, Urban Air Mobility, Supersonic and Hypersonic Travel. Enhancing Safety and Security remains paramount to ensure safer skies.

A healthy, resilient aviation sector that recognizes its climate responsibilities is essential to reconnecting the world.

Civil Aviation is crucial in promoting economic development in nations, interconnecting the world, and promoting cultural exchange. For 80 years, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has been working on ensuring global aviation is safe and secure. ICAO initiative and support from the government of Canada, the UN adopted a resolution to observe 7 December as “International Civil Aviation Day”. 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation in Chicago, United States. Observation aims to enhance awareness of the role of international civil aviation in social and economic development.

At any given minute, ~8000 aeroplanes fly over the world’s skies, with ~100,000 flights taking off and landing daily. Globally, ~10 million passengers travel by air. The US has the highest number of air travellers, followed by China. In India, ~ 4.5 lakh people fly every day. An estimate indicates that there are ~31000 civil aircrafts (civilian and commercial) in the global fleet, operated by over 750 airlines. The civil aviation industry employs ~11.3 million people worldwide. These include jobs in airlines, airports, and air navigation service providers. It is a 2.7 trillion-dollar economy. There are over 41,700 airports worldwide, with the most airports in the US (15873) followed by Brazil (4919). There are a few countries where no airline lands because they do not have airports. Liechtenstein and Vatican City (the smallest country in the world) are some of them.

China is experiencing significant growth (~4.4%) and has become the largest market in aviation, surpassing North America. In India, the first commercial flight launched from Allahabad carried mail in 1911, which began Civil aviation in India. The country is seeing rapid growth in its aviation sector.

The number of lives lost due to aeroplane accidents varies yearly and has decreased considerably. Take-off and landing are the most dangerous times. ~61 % of fatal accidents happen during these times specifically. Incidents like the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in 2014 remain a mystery and put a streak of worry about the safety of aircraft.

Some people have a fear of flying (aerophobia or aviophobia). Though ~40% of people have flying anxiety, with ~2.6-6.5% of people having the phobia. Learning about how planes work, and air travel safety can help reduce fear. Adopting Relaxation Techniques would help.

The aviation industry is focussing on absorbing emerging and innovative technologies. Uncrewed aircraft operations are likely to grow. Putting the regulatory process in place for them is essential. The future of civil aviation will focus on sustainable aviation, reducing the environmental impact of aviation by developing alternative fuels and exploring electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, Urban Air Mobility, Supersonic and Hypersonic Travel. Enhancing Safety and Security remains paramount to ensure safer skies.

When young, you want to fly and think it is the limit. You would realise that it is just beginning.
