World Scout Day: Celebrating Leadership, Service, and Global Unity.
World Scout Day is observed every year on 22nd February. It marks the birth anniversary of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the scouting movement. It is a celebration of the spirit of scouting, which impacted several young people’s lives, prepared them to face life confidently and contribute where needed. It is a day to reflect on the principles of scouting. The scouting movement began in 1907, with the first camp organised at Brownsea Island in England by Lord Baden-Powell. Baden-Powell vision was to create a program that would teach young life skills, leadership, and a sense of community. It started with Boy Scouts, later the Girl Guides, and has grown into a global movement. The Scout movement spread throughout the British Commonwealth and to different countries, and youth training eventually became famous. Powell was lauded as Chief Scout of the World.
Societies have focussed on imparting holistic education for overall development. Scouts & Guides has all the ingredients to mould individuals into well-rounded individuals. Through scouting, young people learn the importance of teamwork, leadership, and community service. The spirit of scouting continues to inspire and empower future generations, ensuring that the legacy of Lord Baden-Powell lives on. By addressing physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and character, scouting provides a comprehensive framework for personal growth and development. The Scout slogan is Do a Good Turn Daily. Doing something to help others each day without expecting anything in return.
Recent estimates indicate that there are ~ five crore participants globally and across 200 countries, making it one of the largest youth movements. Indonesia has the highest number of scouts globally (an organisation known as Gerakan Pramuka), with approximately 2.16 crore members. Followed by India, which had around 38 lakh scouts and 13 lakh guides. The United States has 22 lakh members. National Cadet Corps (NCC), another organisation focussing on youth development, has a strength of ~14 lakh cadets in India.
The Bharat Scouts and Guides Association was formed in 1951. The Bharat Scouts and Guides organisation serves ~ 38 lakh Scouts and 13 lakh Guides in India. Making it one of the world’s largest scouting and guiding organisations. While many scouts and guides join through school programs, the movement extends beyond educational institutions. Â
A prominent theosophist and social reformer, Annie Besant founded the Indian Scout Association in 1913. Lakshmi Mazumdar served as the National Commissioner of the Bharat Scouts and Guides and was a significant figure in developing the guiding movement in India. The highest recognition for Scouts and Guides in India is the Rashtrapati Scout/Guide Award. Conferred by the President of India. Awardees participate in Republic Day events and parades.
