WHO data indicate that nearly 1 in 4 people worldwide live with some form of vision impairment, and 1 in 5 experience some degree of hearing loss. The concept of deafblindness as a distinct disability is relatively recent. For many years, people were classified separately as blind or deaf. During the late 20th century, disability organisations and researchers increasingly recognised that the combined loss of hearing and vision. ~0.2% of the world’s population lives with severe deafblindness. An additional 2% of the population experiences milder forms of combined hearing and vision loss that can significantly affect daily life. Together, these account for ~16 crore people. It is estimated that India has ~5.5 lakh people with Deafblindness. Experts believe the true number may be higher due to underdiagnosis and limited data collection.
As populations age, the number of people experiencing age-related deafblindness is expected to increase. Research shows that prevalence rises sharply among people aged 75 and older. Available research suggests that deafblindness is generally slightly more common among women than men, particularly in older age groups.

Deafblindness results from a complex variety of genetic, congenital, acquired, and age-related factors. Acquired deafblindness is more common than congenital Deafblindness. More than 70 causes of deafblindness are identified. Some forms, particularly those caused by genetic disorders such as Usher syndrome, are the most common condition (~50% hereditary) that affects both hearing and vision.
Several risk factors increase the likelihood of deafblindness. Advanced maternal age, family history of genetic conditions, consanguineous marriages (marriage between close relatives), and certain ethnic backgrounds may increase genetic risks for some conditions. Premature birth significantly increases the risk of deafblindness.
Many deafblind individuals use specialised communication methods. Advances in digital technology are making information and communication increasingly accessible. Smartphones, wearable devices, artificial intelligence, and assistive technologies now help many deafblind individuals navigate daily life more independently.
Gene therapy research, stem cell treatments, and precision medicine approaches offer hope for future therapeutic interventions. Understanding the molecular basis of various forms of deafblindness is leading to more targeted treatment approaches and better prognostic information for families and individuals affected by these conditions.
