The Greatest Investment A Nation Can Make Is in The Skills Of Its Youth.
World Youth Skills Day is observed on July 15 and is a UN observance that began in 2014. It is to raise awareness of the strategic importance of engaging the youth and to equip and train them with life skills, ensuring they pursue meaningful lives. Youth can be best understood as a period of transition from childhood dependence to independence. This generation has enormous potential, but many young people face challenges. Youth have the creativity, potential, and capacity to drive change for themselves, their communities, and the societies they live in.
Today, there are 1.3 billion young people aged 15 to 24 years (~16% of the global population). In the coming years, it is likely to grow further by ~7%. ~60% of them live in just 10 countries. India remains younger than many other countries, with China, Indonesia, and the USA following. Africa’s youthful population is expanding rapidly, with countries such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo expected to see significant growth in their youth populations. Nigeria has one of the world’s fastest-growing youth populations. It is projected to be an even larger contributor in the coming decades.
Every Skill Learned Today Becomes an Opportunity Tomorrow.
In a rapidly changing world shaped by AI, automation, climate change, and digital transformation, learning has become a lifelong journey. Acquiring the right skills has never been more important. World Youth Skills Day emphasises that investing in young people is one of the best investments any society can make. Many young people are creating their own opportunities by becoming entrepreneurs. Not every successful career begins with a university degree. Vocational Education and Training (TVET) provides practical, job-oriented learning that prepares individuals for specific careers. The government of India is taking several measures to enable youth to find their rightful place in the nation’s growth.
