World First Aid Day

First Aid and Sports

Caring for others is an instinctive trait of human beings. It is a different matter that, in search of prosperity, forget things we must do. When someone is hurt, the initial few minutes are crucial. An initiative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies led to the observation of “World First Aid Day”, which is observed on the second Saturday of September every year (this year is on 14 September). Every household should have one who is trained in providing first aid. In the workplace, first aid boxes should not only adhere to mandatory requirements. The observation also shows appreciation for those giving their time and efforts to provide first aid. As challenges and opportunities continue to evolve, there is a need to create a world where everyone can act as a first responder and make a life-changing impact. The theme for World First Aid Day 2024 is “First Aid and Sports.” With more and more people pursuing sports as a profession in their journey of growth, being fit is crucial. When an athlete or sportsperson gets injured, the aid we give him matters first.

Caring for others is an instinctive trait of human beings. It is a different matter that, in search of prosperity, forget things we must do. It is not uncommon for us to see people crowding during a road accident. People crowd there because someone is hurt and want to know more about it. The social media bug strikes these days, and you see everyone taking their phones and recording, taking pictures and sharing with others. When someone is hurt, the initial few minutes are crucial. In the case of cardiac attacks, those few minutes can be the difference between survival and not.

The question to be asked is how many of us are equipped
to get into action and provide that aid.
Yes, it is the first aid that we are discussing.

The notion of providing preliminary care to the injured has been around for a long time in the history of humankind. The concept of formal first aid training emerged in the 18-19th century.   “A Memory of Solferino,” by Henry Dunant, reminds us of the agony of a large number of soldiers suffering and the lack of support for them. It catalysed the events leading to the establishment of “World First Aid Day”. The movement Blossomed into a Global Movement. The “Foundation of the International Committee of the Red Cross” emphasised the need for civilians to be trained in providing first aid. First aid education gained momentum globally by the second half of the 20th century.

An initiative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies led to the observation of “World First Aid Day”, which has been celebrated since 2000. It is observed on the second Saturday of September every year (this year is on 14 September). Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies worldwide organise events as part of World First Aid Day.

The International Federation of Red Cross believes that first should also be an integral part of a more comprehensive developmental approach. Every household should have one who is trained in providing first aid. In the workplace, first aid boxes should not only adhere to mandatory requirements. The observation also shows appreciation for those giving their time and efforts to provide first aid.

The theme for World First Aid Day 2024 is “First Aid and Sports”. With more and more people pursuing sports as a profession in their growth journey, being fit is crucial. When an athlete or sportsperson gets injured, the aid we give him matters first.

First aid Saves lives.
Empowering individuals with first aid skills
leads to building resilient communities.

As challenges and opportunities continue to evolve, there is a need to create a world where everyone can act as a first responder and make a life-changing impact.
