Climate change is there to see and threaten the health of the environment. Climate change and disaster risks are fundamental threats to sustainable development. The impact of climate change is negating the decades of progress seen by the world. 26 September 2024 marks the 13th World Environmental Health Day (WEHD). The communities must be resilient and sustainable to address climate change and reduce disaster risk. It is time for communities worldwide to unite and commit to implementing sustainable practices for the environment’s health. The current generation is responsible for ensuring a healthy environment and ensuring future generations sustain healthy living.

Climate change is there to see. Threatening the health of the environment. The world is experiencing a rise in temperatures, extreme weather events and a rise in the sea-level rise. Such variations impact the health and well-being of humans. Humans are experiencing issues such as heat stress, respiratory problems, and waterborne diseases. Climate change and disaster risks are fundamental threats to sustainable development. The impact of climate change is negating the decades of progress seen by the world. Disaster risk reduction involves strategies to minimise the damage caused by natural disasters. It warrants having early warning systems, sustainable land use planning, and community education.

26 September 2024 marks the 13th World Environmental Health Day (WEHD). The observation of “World Environmental Health Day” started in 2011. It is the initiative of the “International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH)”, representing professionals from over 70 countries. The federation promotes best practices in environmental health. It also contributes to advocating for policies protecting the environment and human health.  

Environmental health refers to all the aspects of the natural and built environment which impact human health. It includes air and water quality, waste management, and the control of environmental hazards. Environmental health is vital for everyone but essential for vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions. The communities must be resilient and sustainable to address climate change and reduce disaster risk. Exploring the potential opportunities for converting them to plan sustainable development. This year’s observation theme focuses on the same.

It is time for communities worldwide to unite and commit to implementing sustainable practices for the environment’s health. The well-being of the people is linked to a healthy planet. It is fundamental not only to the present but to future generations. We can play a role and contribute to bringing about a balance between humans and the environment. Using what is necessary for comfortable living and saying no to the over-exploitation of resources is the duty of all human beings. The current generation is responsible for ensuring a healthy environment and ensuring future generations sustain healthy living.
