World Philosophy Day

Philosophy: Bridging Social Gaps

In today’s increasingly complex and interconnected world, philosophy remains as relevant as ever. Observation of World Philosophy Day is an initiative of UNESCO. It is observed annually on the third Thursday of November. The word “philosophy” originates in the ancient Greek term philosophia.  Philosophy teaches you to think critically and analytically and enhances understanding of ethical issues. Ancient philosophies like Greek, Indian, Chinese and Iranian have laid the foundation for modern thought. The world has seen great philosophers like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Confucius. India has a rich tradition of philosophical thought. Some of the most well-known Indian philosophers included Adi Shankara, Gautama Buddha, Ramanuja, Nagarjuna, Sri Aurobindo and Jiddu Krishnamurti. When someone says they are “becoming philosophical”, it is adopting a thoughtful, contemplative approach to a situation. It is required now more than ever. To solve the problems created by humans, which impacted the environment, enhanced imbalance and disparity.

In order to build a better world to move towards an ideal of peace, we know that we must adopt a philosophical approach – namely, we must question the flaws of our world beyond the tumult of crises. Philosophy is, therefore, essential when it comes to defining the ethical principles that should guide humanity.
Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Philosophy studies fundamental questions concerning existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language or life. It offers a path to address ethical and moral dilemmas societies face, especially in an era of rapid technological advancements and social media. In today’s increasingly complex and interconnected world, philosophy remains as relevant as ever. Philosophy can bridge societal divides, address inequalities and promote understanding in an increasingly fragmented world. Observation of “World Philosophy Day” is an initiative of UNESCO, adopted in 2002, and has been observed regularly since 2005. It is observed annually on the third Thursday of November 2024, on November 21.

The word “philosophy” originates in the ancient Greek term philosophia.  It is a combination of two Greek words: phílos, meaning “friend” or “lover,” and sophía, meaning “wisdom”. Philosophia is translated as “love of wisdom” or “love of knowledge”.

The concept of philosophy has evolved over time,
but its roots in the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge remain central.

Philosophy teaches you to think critically and analytically and enhances understanding of ethical issues. Studying different philosophical traditions leads to gaining insights into various cultures, fostering greater empathy and understanding.

Ancient philosophies like Greek, Indian, Chinese and Iranian have laid the foundation for modern thought. These philosophies have deeply influenced various cultural, religious, and intellectual thought aspects.  Socrates is often considered the founder of Western philosophy. Plato, a student of Socrates, wrote extensively on justice and equality. Aristotle, a student of Plato, contributed to logic, metaphysics and ethics.  Karl Marx, through his writings, influenced political thought and movements worldwide. Confucius, the Chinese philosopher’s teachings, have deeply influenced East Asian culture and philosophy. India has a rich tradition of philosophical thought spanning thousands of years. Some of the most well-known Indian philosophers included Adi Shankara, Gautama Buddha,  Ramanuja, Nagarjuna, Sri Aurobindo and Jiddu Krishnamurti. Chanakya, also known as Kautilya, writings dealt with governance. These philosophers have left lasting legacies through their profound insights and contributions to various fields of thought.

Many prestigious institutions worldwide are known for their excellent philosophy programs. Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge, Stanford, Berkeley (USA), University of Toronto (Canada), Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany), and University of Paris (France) are some of them. The National University of Singapore (Singapore) has a growing reputation for its philosophy program, with a focus on Asian philosophical traditions. Banaras Hindu University has a long-standing tradition in philosophical studies in India, focusing on Indian philosophy and comparative studies. Jawaharlal Nehru University offers courses in both Indian and Western philosophical traditions. There are many others, too.

Philosophy graduates bring value through their ability to think deeply, reason logically, and communicate effectively, making them suitable for various roles across different sectors. Philosophy graduates have many career opportunities due to their strong analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills.

When someone says they are “becoming philosophical,” it is adopting a thoughtful, contemplative approach to a situation. It is about seeking deeper meaning and maintaining a balanced perspective, even in difficult times. It is required now more than ever. To solve the problems created by humans, which impacted the environment, enhanced imbalance and disparity. The world has to take a view to balance between overexploiting nature’s resources for materialistic comforts and ensuring sustainability.

World Philosophy Day
belongs to everyone, everywhere,
