National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Human trafficking is a significant global issue and impacts people across the nations. “National Human Trafficking Awareness Day” is observed on 11 January every year. It is part of a month-long campaign focussing our attention on education and prevention. Human trafficking is the exploitation of people for labour, domestic servitude, and forced sexual exploitation. Simply put, it is the act of pushing the unwilling people. An estimate indicates ~27.6 million victims worldwide at any given time. Slavery, in some form, has existed for hundreds of years. Over time, human trafficking has evolved into various forms, including forced labour, sexual exploitation, and organ trafficking. With all its intelligence, it is the greed taking over that leads to such horrific trends of human trafficking. When people leave this world, they do not carry the wealth they accumulated with them, nor when they encounter health issues, they realise that money cannot find solutions to all. We can only pray that good sense prevails and that we see a reduction in such horrific deeds.
We must strengthen protection responses – including child-sensitive justice mechanisms, raise awareness, support unaccompanied children on the move, provide care for survivors, and tackle the root causes of exploitation by helping vulnerable families.
António Guterres, UN Secretary Genera
Human trafficking is a significant global issue and impacts people across the nations. “National Human Trafficking Awareness Day”, observed on 11 Janaury every year, was established by the US when the Senate passed a resolution to the observance in 2007. It is part of a month-long campaign focussing our attention on education and prevention. Considering the complexity and the need for all nations to come together to solve this problem, the UN observes “World Day Against Trafficking Persons” on 30 July every year.
Human trafficking is the exploitation of people for labour, domestic servitude, and forced sexual exploitation. Simply put, it is the act of pushing the unwilling people. Slavery, in some form, has existed for hundreds of years. The slave trade is part of modern history and a shameful memory humans have to live with. As stated in the 1400s, millions of Africans were traded for forced labour or sexual exploitation. By the 1800s, good sense prevailed, and governments began declaring the slave trade illegal. Over time, human trafficking has evolved into various forms, including forced labour, sexual exploitation, and organ trafficking.
Human Trafficking affects Millions across the Globe.
Human trafficking is considered a modern form of slavery, and every country is impacted by the same. A US estimate indicates that there are ~27.6 million victims worldwide at any given time. Human traffickers prey on people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities. Children make up 27% of all human trafficking victims worldwide, and two out of every three identified child victims are girls. Approximately 80% of human trafficking today involves sexual exploitation, while 19% involves labour exploitation. With the advent of social media, online platforms emerged, making the young vulnerable and allowing traffickers to exploit victims across borders.
Human trafficking is a global issue, and it occurs in many countries around the world. People of countries with prolonged armed conflicts, both internal and with neighbouring countries, are most vulnerable to being exploited due to human trafficking. Efforts to combat human trafficking require international cooperation, stronger laws, and increased awareness to protect vulnerable populations.
With all its intelligence, it is the greed taking over that leads to such horrific trends of human trafficking. With all their efforts, hard work, and intelligence, humans are trying to solve the problems of providing health care and ensuring well-being and a just society. Some are using the same tools to exploit. It is the greed that guides them. When people leave this world, they do not carry the wealth they accumulated with them, nor when they encounter health issues, they realise that money cannot find solutions to all. We can only pray that good sense prevails and that we see a reduction in such horrific deeds.
Human trafficking is a horrific crime
that targets the most vulnerable in our societies.
