Nature Restoration – Acting Locally for Global Impact

Nature Restoration Day is observed on June 5. A specialised observance launched by the European Commission, focusing on ecosystem restoration, soil health, and biodiversity revival and this year is its first observation. Continued capacity to function as a vital, living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans reflects the health of the soil. Global soil fertility maps show that large regions of the world are experiencing declines in organic matter and nutrient levels. By combining modern science with traditional wisdom, communities across the world are proving that local action can drive global change. We should all remember and revere the soil and contribute to its health. As Sadguru says, “All of us come from soil, feed upon soil, and go back to soil”.

Nature Restoration Day is observed on June 5, 2026. A specialised observance launched by the European Commission in 2026, focusing on ecosystem restoration, soil health, and biodiversity revival and this year is its first observation. Continued capacity to function as a vital, living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans reflects the health of the soil. Soil degradation is a major problem, characterised by reduced fertility and carbon loss. Global soil fertility maps show that large regions of the world are experiencing declines in organic matter and nutrient levels. The regions where soil degradation is most alarming today are the Amazon and Congo Basins, and parts of India, such as the Brahmaputra Valley. Limited awareness makes community engagement a challenge. By combining modern science with traditional wisdom, communities across the world are proving that local action can drive global change.
Restoring Ecosystems Is Not Optional; It Is Essential for Survival and Resilience.
Healthy ecosystems regulate climate, purify water, and support food security. It is reported that two-thirds of EU soils are unhealthy; restoration is vital for agriculture and carbon storage. Pollinators like bees and butterflies are declining, threatening food systems. Local projects demonstrate how grassroots participation can create global impact.Sadhguru has made soil health a central theme of his global “Save Soil” movement, stressing that restoring soil fertility is essential for food security, climate resilience, and human wellbeing. He says, “All of us come from soil, feed upon soil, and go back to soil”.

World Environment Day is also observed on June 5. It is more comprehensive, serving as the umbrella observance for all environmental issues. The “Nature Restoration Day” is more specialised, spotlighting soil health, pollinators, and ecosystem revival.
With the explosion of population, the uneven distribution of people has resulted in problems of a different nature. Rampant use of natural resources and the disregard for the time required for restoration are starting to impact wellbeing. We should all remember and revere the soil and contribute to its health.
